Hi HRES members and friends.

It looks like we might have an improvement in good weather here in the Hudson Valley. With all of the rain we have received, my yard looks like a hay field.

We had our monthly online Executive Committee meeting on May 21, 2025. Chuck, Emilie, Dave, and I attended.

Here is a brief summary of the agenda topics we discussed:

  • 2025 Symposium Progress – Chuck had a conference planning committee meeting in May. The proposed symposium theme being considered will be Habitat Restoration on the Hudson. Topics that may be included: Dams, SAV, Phragmites control, channel restoration, historical perspectives & history of restoration plans, oysters, shoreline, In-river and funding opportunities. Considering October for the symposium.
  • Normanskill Field Trip: May 17, 2025: Emilie – Simon Litten organized a very informative field trip to the Normanskill region.  We had ten attendees including our former Executive Director Stephen Wilson. We lucked out with the weather. The speakers presented detailed information on the geology, the complex history of the area with the interactions of the Dutch, native peoples, the British, and the Americans living in the area. We also got an overview of the workings of the Watervliet dam and hydroelectric plant and the environmental educational programs currently ongoing in the Normanskill region.
  • Treasurer’s Report: David – Accounts total = $40,351.
  • Summer Newsletter: David- Topics being considered: May field trip, interview with JR Jacobson (NYSDEC & HRES 2025 Distinguished Service Award winner), McKeon Student Grant awardees and a Save the Date of the Symposium notice.  Dave intends to get the newsletter out in June.
  • Memberships: Jim – Renewals are continuing. After many years of participating in HRES events, Bill Dey has retired from the Board. We will miss his many contributions to HRES and to the board.
  • www.hres.org: Jim –  I will contact Jeff to see if we can set up a training date(s) in June to learn how to work with the new website.

Next meeting is scheduled for June 18, 2025.
