2026 Hudson River Symposium:

Community and Citizen Based Science in the Hudson River Estuary and Watershed

Cary Institute of Ecosystem Systems, Millbrook, New York

October 28, 2026; 9 am to 5:30 pm

This year’s symposium will focus on citizen & community-based science and monitoring in the Hudson River Estuary and Watershed. The 2026 Annual Symposium will focus on citizen and community-based science and monitoring in the Hudson River estuary and watershed. Our symposium topic builds on the decades-long legacy of public engagement and citizen monitoring in the watershed. Public engagement through science monitoring is a dual-win situation, providing significant opportunities for both the community participants and the science projects. Participants deepen their scientific literacy, develop expanded local networks, build knowledge and empowerment around topics of their interest. Science projects achieve expanded reach and capacity through larger, more distributed participant numbers, and develop a strong set of community colleagues to support their continued efforts, and provide results that can be used in planning, management and policy.

Presenters: Cate Collinson, Billion Oyster Project; Stuart Findlay, Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies; Laura Heady, Cornell DNR, New York State DEC; Kristi MacDonald, Hudsonia; Sarah Mount, NEIWPCC, New York State DEC; Jem Pickard, Riverkeeper; Catherine Purnella, New York Sea Grant; and Emilie Vail, Hudson River Watershed Alliance.
